Just Beautiful Review, October 24, 2006

A Kid's Review

Heather Barlow, the main character in Angel of Mercy, was back from Africa as a missoionary, and was trying to readjust to the big Miami lifestyle she used to be acustomed to. Although she was happy to return home to her family, she could not forget about losing her beloved Ian, or about little baby Alice, the child that she rescued that needed surgery. Heather was so sad to leave, nothing could detour her mind from returning, so she talks her mkom into returning with her, this would help because her mom is a surgeon. Her mother decides to go. A week before they leave Heather becomes ill, Amber her sister found her lying in a pool of blood on their bathroom floor. Heather's plans are then shattered because the doctor orders to stay in bed for at least two weeks. Seeing how upset her siter is about being away from Africa, Amber decides to take her place. When Amber arrives in Africa, she has no clue what to expect or what fate has in store for her.........
I loved this book, I loved the fact that it touched me so much. I cried reading the very end of it. I never expected what happened to happen because until the end it had you guessing. On a scale of 1-5 stars i would give it a 10, it was absoluetly beautiful!

Angel of Hope by Lurlene McDaniel is a great book if you like a romantic adventure. Lurlene McDaniel has written many books but I personally think this is one of her best. This is a wonderful book. I didn't want to put it down until I was finished reading it. It is a spectacular book about a young girl, Amber, who goes to Africa because her sister Heather became very ill and couldn't go back. She meets the people that Heather talked so greatly about from her trip on the Mercy Ship. Africa isn't at all what amber thought it out to be. She stayed with Paul and Jodene as Heather did on her trip. Amber soon met Boyce Callahan he was there working on a project. They quickly became friends. But is Amber ready for what Africa has in store for her next?

I have loved reading Lurlene McDaniel's books for many years and I would have to say this is the BEST of the best! I was so compeltely taken in by this book. I loved the story of Heather trying to adjust back to the USA, I loved the emotional situtaions Amber found herself in and how she would do anything for Heather and I lvoed that the mother and Amber ended up going to Africa....I have always had a place in my heart for the children in Africa and this just made me want to do more....I am planning a missiosn trip there next summmer...as soon as I put down the book I got active. This book is sad...but so full of HOPE! CONGRATS!

This is a fun, practical and inspiring read for parents of children with Aspergers. With humor, common sense and love, the author relates story after story about the stops along the way of raising a child with Aspergers. The stories, some of them very funny, show us by example how we can all advocate for our children, problem solve, develop networks of support, interact positively as parents and, through it all and most of all, how we can appreciate, love and simply enjoy all the funny, quirky things that make our children so wonderful and special.

Empowering and Inspirational Story, September 7, 2009

This book gives HOPE to all of us who have children on the autistic spectrum. It is pioneer's, like Karra, who share their experiential journey, and guides us to support systems available for our children. Each of us must travel a long , arduous journey with the challenges our children face. You must become their advocate, just as Karra has been for Thomas. Her book is well researched, personal, and yet, gives you enough references as to not overwhelm you as you read their story. I like how Karra shares views of Thomas' challenges, but even more important his gifts! Each of us needs to appreciate the uniqueness of these kids , and in turn you as their parent become even prouder of their accomplishments. I highly recommend this book!

Excellent!, May 5, 2006

After reading this book, I felt empowered. Miss Barber makes you realize that your child is special and gives reassuring advice and examples from everyday experiences with her child. I don't know how many times I laughed out loud, while learning so much I needed to know.
I would recommend this book to everyone who has a child with Aspergers as well as anyone who knows someone with Aspergers. The "get it" factor is brilliant and so helpful. The writing is straight to the point, and easy to read. It's not above my head or too technical. This is the perfect book for parents who need help but don't know where to start.

Student Choice Book Review, March 30, 2007

A Kid's Review

Raspberry is certain...something's got to change. Raspberry Hill is a teenager who is going through some hardships in her life. Her mother was taken to the hospital after being attacked by a wisecracking teenage neighbor. As a result, Raspberry goes to stay with her friend Zora and her dad, Dr. Mitchell. While staying there, Raspberry steals from Zora's purse, while at a restaurant. Once her mom is well again, Raspberry moves back with her mom, but her crack-headed father returns and steals her money. With this, Raspberry apologizes to Zora and understands what it is like to have something be taken without permission. I recommend this book to all teenagers and their friends.

For one, it includes real life situations. Like when her father steals her money out of her room. Also the book shows how many parents are struggling and trying to pay the bills. In addition it describes what it is like to live in Section 8 or not have a caring father. Begging for change does an excellent job making the reader get emotionally feelings for the characters in the book.

Next, you could relate to the characters and their actions. For example, I could sense Zora's anger after Raspberry steals from her. In addition, I could experience Raspberry's joy once her mother comes home from the hospital. Also, I felt Raspberry's rue after stealing from Zora. While reading this book, I could put myself in their positions and see what I would have done.

Begging for Change has a wonderful moral for all people to understand. For instance, no matter how jealous you are, you should never steal from your friends like Raspberry did. In addition, when you steal from someone, it has an impact on your whole family and friends. After Raspberry's family and friends found out that she had stolen from Zora, no one wanted to talk to her or be her friend. Last, the best choice that you can make is to come clean about the problem no matter how much trouble you get into. Once Raspberry told Zora the truth, they became the best of friends.

This book can teach you a lot in life. It was easy to read and comprehend what was going on. If you like to read books that you can relate to then you should read Begging for Change. Remember, it's not how you make a mistake, it is what you do after it takes place.
