3 Must Have Essesntial Oils to Calm Your Pet

The reason I love animals so much is that they give off an attitude of happiness, innocence and unconditional love to their people. Our pets are just as happy being a part of our household as we are of having them with us.

But sometimes an animal comes into our life that is a bit “out there!” For instance, the dog that has an irrational fear of rain and won’t for the life of him go outside to potty during a rain shower. Or the cat who hides for hours when a friend comes over. Or, how about the dog with attachment issues that destroys the house while you’re at work? Any of these sound familiar?

My cat’s, Sammie and Max, love to hang out on our screened-in patio. But whenever the garbage truck comes rolling in, they flee for their lives! It might sound crazy to us, but whatever your animal’s fears or wacky behaviors may be, they are completely legitimate in their minds.

Using essential oils on your animals can really take the edge off of their anxiety, big time! Because of an animal’s heightened senses, they respond very well to essential oils. In the wild, animals eat specific plants to heal themselves. In captivity (our homes), the plant kingdom is not readily available.

Using essential oils on your pet gives them access to the vast healing properties of nature.

The three best essential oils to calm your pets are:

Lavender

Roman Chamomile

Peace & Calming® (a blend from Young Living)

These essential oils can be used to support your animal with; fear of rain and thunderstorms, separation anxiety, hyperactivity, trauma/abuse, depression, Illness, trips to the vet’s office, grief/loss of another family pet and any other situation that causes great stress for your animal, such as garbage trucks!

When you apply essential oils to animals, always remember less is more as animals are very sensitive to essential oils. Also, with animals, it’s best to dilute essential oils with a carrier oil such as organic olive oil. I recommend one part essential oil to 1 part carrier oil for all animals EXCEPT cats. The dilution ratio for cats is 1 part essential oil to 10 parts carrier oil.

Use caution with cats!

Any of the essential oils listed in this article are safe for dogs and horses, however; cats are a different story! Cats are extremely sensitive to essential oils containing phenols, such as oregano and thyme. Cats can not effectively metabolize phenols because they lack an enzyme in their liver to digest the phenols. Avoid Peace & Calming® essential oil blend on your cat, as it does contain phenols. Lavender and Roman Chamomile essential oils ARE safe for cats.

How to apply essential oils on dogs, horses and cats:

For calming dogs:

Mix 1 drop Lavender, Roman Chamomile or Peace & Calming® essential oil with 1 drop carrier oil. Rub this mixture on your dogs pads, ears or comb through their fur. Apply any time you sense your dog is stressed.

For calming horses:

Mix 1 drop Lavender, Roman Chamomile or Peace & Calming® essential oil with 1 drop carrier oil. Rub this mixture on your horse’s muzzle, ears or cornet bands. Apply any time your horse is stressed.

For calming cats:

Mix 1 drop Lavender or Roman Chamomile essential oil with 10 drops carrier oil. Rub this mixture on your cat’s pads, ears or comb through their fur. Apply any time your cat is stressed.

By the way, the essential oils in this article are also good for easing your anxieties, too! Dilution is not required on humans. Just apply a drop or two on your wrists, shoulders or behind your ears.

And the next time you’re opening up a bottle of lavender essential oil, share some with your animal friends! They’ll thank you!

Essential Oils or Botox?

Today, society is pushing Botox and an array of other quick fix procedures to fight aging. These procedures are mostly short-term solutions and need to be repeated again and again, spending loads of money in the process. While these procedures may help us look better temporarily, I ask you, “Is it really worth it to put these chemicals on and in our bodies?” I don’t think so!

There are many natural remedies that can help our skin look its best. My favorite way to promote healthy skin is by using therapeutic grade essential oils.

Therapeutic grade essential oils have the power to prevent and regress wrinkles, rejuvenate healthy skin cells and slow the aging process. Ancient Egyptians knew this secret and used essential oils in all their skin care salves and lotions. Essential oils were valued higher than gold at that time.

Essential oils contain high amounts of oxygenating molecules that have the ability to pass through your cell membranes. They carry oxygen and nutrients to every cell in your body. Have you heard the term “anti-oxidant?” Anti-oxidants destroy the free radicals in our bodies, thus keeping us youthful and healthy. Essential oils contain the highest amounts of anti-oxidants on the planet!

Unlike Botox, essential oils will not atrophy and paralyze your facial muscles, but they can help to even your skin tone, regress wrinkles and fight aging, all the while being safe and natural with no risky side effects.

Here are a few of my favorite skin recipes from the Essential Oils Desk Reference, 4th Edition, by Essential Science Publishing:

Wrinkle Reducing Blend:

5 drops Sandalwood

4 drops Geranium

3 drops Lavender

6 drops Frankincense

Dilute this mixture 50:50 in a high grade, un-perfumed organic face or body lotion. Apply 2 times a day or as needed.

Stretch Mark Reducing Essential Oils: Lavender Myrrh Gentle Baby (a blend from Young Living)

Use one or a combination of these oils straight (neat) or diluted 50:50 in a high grade, organic vegetable oil. Apply a few drops on affected areas 2 times a day.

Morning Skin Firming Blend:

3 drops Tangerine

3 drops Cypress

Evening Skin Firming Blend:

8 drops Patchouli

5 drops Cypress

5 drops Geranium

1 drop Sandalwood

Use straight (neat) on location or dilute 50:50 in a high grade, un-perfumed organic face or body lotion. Apply 4-6 drops of each recipe at the specific time of day mentioned above.

If you’re looking for a natural, chemical free approach to skin care, you won’t find anything more powerful than therapeutic grade essential oils. Granted it’s not a quick fix like some modern procedures, but with patience and perseverance, you will see a notable difference in your skin.

Please remember that you should only use the highest quality essential oils, such as those from Young Living. Using low quality oils in the methods mentioned above is not recommended.

Are Essential Oils in Your Medicine Cabinet?

These days, between drug stores and TV commercials, we’re inundated with so many choices to relieve pain, colds and flus, diarrhea, upset stomachs, allergies, and so on.How do you know which products are best? And why the heck do we need so many?

We can surely waste a lot of time in the drug store searching for the perfect remedy. Reading label after label and hoping we don’t suffer any funky side effects. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to use natural medicine for almost all of your health concerns without the fear of side effects? Well you can. The solution is therapeutic grade essential oils.

Essential oils have been used as medicine for thousands of years. And today, the rediscovery of true, medicinal aromatherapy is affecting thousands of people in profound ways. I am one of those fortunate people who have experienced, first hand, the medicinal benefits of essential oils. And I will never be without them!

Please know that I’m not suggesting you stop any prescription medications you might be taking. Those are very important for your health. Always consult with your doctor before stopping or lowering your dose.

Here are 3 easy natural remedies for some all-to-common ailments using pure therapeutic grade essential oils:

1. For Fevers: Rub 3 drops of Peppermint essential oil on each foot. This has worked for me and many people I know, and it’s especially good for children. For children under 2, dilute 1 part essential oil with 10 parts organic vegetable oil.

Peppermint essential oil is also great for upset stomachs, headaches, stuffy noses, indigestion, improving concentration and healing insect bites. One bottle of peppermint essential oil could easily replace at least 6 different medications in your medicine cabinet.

2. For Allergies: Rub a drop or two of Lavender essential oil on your cheeks and under your nose to help clear allergic symptoms, such as sneezing, stuffy nose and watery eyes.

Lavender essential oil is a natural antihistamine and it’s also a great stress-reliever. It helps to calm the body and mind when inhaled. It also cleanses cuts and wounds, prevents scaring from burns and helps heal sunburn. Having a bottle of lavender essential oil on hand can replace quite a few common medications.

3. For Joint Pain: Rub a few drops of an essential oil blend called PanAway on sore joints, as needed. This blend has helped me with back pain more times than I can count!

PanAway essential oil blend contains wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens), helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum), clove (Syzygium aromaticum) and peppermint (Mentha piperita.) This blend is also helpful to relieve muscle soreness associated with exercising. By using PanAway, you’re able to replace over-the-counter muscle rubs and even common pain reliever pills.

The beauty of using therapeutic grade essential oils is that you are able to get the same results as if you were using common medications, but without the side effects. Please remember that when you are using essential oils as medicine, ONLY use therapeutic grade.
